DOHA: Students from Qatar University (QU) showcased a research, introducing  black boxes for cars, during the recent international conference on public transport in Doha.
The three-day forum hosted by Mowasalat at Qatar National Convection Center discussed safety and security issues related to large public transport events, with a focus on the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar
The research recommended a black box in cars similar to those in aircraft to record what happened in the vehicle before it met with an accident, in a bid to reduce road mishaps.
It also recommended vehicle modifications to absorb the impact of an accident so that the driver or passengers are not harmed.
A car can protect its occupants when the speed is up to 65kmph but the research aims to provide similar protection to occupants when the speed is at least 80kmph. The research also called for stricter laws to reduce accidents and fatalities.
It also recommended separate lanes for public buses and private cars and bus stations that are friendly for male and female passengers as most women do not avail themselves of bus services.
The research stressed the need for promoting public transport.
The Minister of Transport,  Vice-President, International Association of Public Transport, and UITP Mena Chairman H E Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti congratulated the organisers for the successful event and said UITP was looking forward to holding the third conference after two years.
He said important recommendations made during the conference would be implemented soon.
The Minister praised the presentation made by students and said it reflected their keen interest in public transport and research.
