ISLAMABAD: The mobile vehicle verification system introduced by the capital police on September 26 has been suspended due to unknown reasons.
Sources in the police said that the service was rolled back on the pressure of influential people in the first week of November. During the 39 days the service remained operational, 269 vehicles were impounded as these were found stolen and being used by influential people after tampering with their chassis and engine numbers.
There are different views about the suspension of the system. Those who were using it said the facility provided to policemen was taken back due to pressure from big-shots.
The sources in the police said the mobile phones installed with a special software had been given to each check post along with the station house officers, sub divisional police officers and superintendents of police to check stolen vehicles and movement of criminals.
The system kept the record of every entry and search with the help of the vehicles’ registration, engine and chassis numbers.
