DOHA: Qatar Charity (QC) has completed several projects on Yemen’s Socotra Island.
Health, education and shelter were among the projects launched by Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Jassim Al Thani, QC General Supervisor of Charitable Quality Projects in Yemen, benefitting thousands of people.
Sheikh Abdul Aziz headed a delegation to the island to inspect the projects and meet beneficiaries.
As part of the focus on health, the delegation, in the presence of the Governor of the island, Saeed Salem Bahguiba, and other officials, launched major projects, including the building of Doha Medical and Social Services Centre.
It will comprise laboratories, a centre for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities, an eye clinic, a pharmacy for the distribution of medicines for children and a kidney dialysis centre. An X-ray centre will be added later.
The delegation launched a  maintenance and restoration project of Qalansia hospital building and the Children’s Hospital.
In support of the fishing sector, Sheikh Abdul Aziz signed a contract with a company that will work to build an ice factory donated by Sheikha Sarah bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Associated needs were identified, including a stone barrier in the sea, boats for fishermen and machines for boats.
In the education sector, the foundation stones were laid for a secondary school and a large hall. The school will be part of a complex, including future primary, middle and secondary schools. The foundation stones for two kindergartens for 200 boys and girls were also laid, another first for the island.
Six mosques are being built, along with a home for the Imam of the Grand Mosque, five classrooms annexed to mosques  to teach the Holy Quran and a wall to protect a mosque along the sea shore.
The delegation also noted the need for the stadium in Hadibo city in Socotra and suggested a location for a factory for dates. The team will also work on providing a pump to supply water to Qalansia.
