BEIJING: Chinese police have shot dead four suspects authorities say attacked a government compound in the troubled northwestern Xinjiang region, according to state media.

The state-run China Radio International cited the regional government as saying that the suspects rammed a car into the government compound of Moyu County -- also known as Karakax -- and set off explosives.

The incident Wednesday reportedly left one other person dead and three injured -- but their identifies were not disclosed.

No further details were provided, but the regional government said social order in Moyu remains “stable”.

The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region is home to a number of ethnic groups including the Uighur, a Turkic-speaking minority who make up 45 percent of the population.

The Muslim minority group has long accused the government of curtailing their cultural and religious rights.
