DOHA: The Al Gazza area, one of the oldest commercial streets in south Medinat Khalifa will soon face the bull dozers as part of massive renovation works, a member of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) has disclosed.
Quoting Mohammed Shaheen Al Ateeq, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday that the Public Works Authority — Ashghal — will start work on a comprehensive infrastructure project in the area from May 1. The project includes sanitation, expansion of streets, lighting and pavements, rain water drains and green areas. The Al Gazza area that houses a number of shops, garages and other service outlets is characterised by narrow streets, old and dilapidated buildings and poor infrastructure facilities.
Al Ateeq said Ashghal has almost completed the new design for the area and the existing streets will be completely demolished as part of the project.
He said the area now accommodates a large number of expatriate single workers. The municipality is making efforts to evacuate them but with little success.
“Gazza area’s design is very old. Houses and streets are very narrow. In case of a fire, it will be difficult for the police and the civil defence team to access the area. Even expatriate families don’t like to live in this place,” said Al Ateeq. The Peninsula
