MANILA: President Benigno Aquino has appointed Rear Admiral Jesus Millan as the new chief of the Philippine Navy, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said yesterday.
Lt-Colonel Ramon Zagala, the AFP spokesman, said Millan will replace Flag-Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Jose Luis Alano, who will reach the retirement age of 56 on May 1.
Millan will formally assume command of the Philippine Navy in a ceremony to be presided over by Aquino at Naval Base Heracleo Alano in the northern Philippine province of Cavite today.
A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1982, Millan is a professional navy officer who has served the AFP in various administrative and operational capacities.
Rebels kill two in Sorsogon
MANILA: A civilian and a soldier were killed and a soldier was wounded when they were ambushed by members of the leftist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA) in Sorsogon last morning, the military said.
Captain Bethany Q Cadungan, spokesman for the Philippine Army’s 903rd Infantry Brigade, said that the two unarmed soldiers, who belong to Alpha Company of 31st Infantry Battalion, were on their way to Casiguran municipal hall by motorcycle when the attack took place, at about 8am, at Casiguran, Sorsogon.
They were attacked by a group of about 15 rebel insurgents who belong to a local NPA unit, the military said.
