DOHA: Inspectors of the state-run consumer rights watchdog have found a number of butcheries in different areas of the country that were allegedly selling meat of small Australian sheep as expensive mutton from some countries whose sheep and their meat sell at a premium.

The Consumer Protection Department, of the Ministry of Business and Trade said the erring butcheries were tampering with the certificates of origin of the slaughtered animals stamped by the municipal authorities, and replacing them so they could hoodwink customers.

There is government subsidy on Australian mutton and rules specify that it must not be sold for more than QR14.5 per kg in retail, while there are some countries like Syria, the meat of whose sheep are determined by supply and demand in the local market and they on average sell for up to QR50 per kg, reports Al Sharq.
