Iran pipeline project delayed

ISLAMABAD: The crucial Iran-Pakistan pipeline envisaging import of 750mcuf of natural gas has been delayed due to political transition in the country and cannot be completed by the contractual deadline of December 31, 2014. The ministry of petroleum and natural resources, however, told the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum yesterday that Tehran had shown willingness to do away with penalties.

3,000 cops  face demotion

LAHORE: More than 3,000 officers, including superintendents, deputy superintendents and inspectors, of the Punjab Police have been served notices by the caretaker provincial government over antedated promotions. They have been asked why they should not be demoted and reverted from their present status, and to explain their position. The government has also notified some superintendents of police that their antedated promotions as sub-inspectors were wrong as at that time no vacancy existed.

US envoy to visit Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: With the US eager to establish a working relationship with the incoming PML-N government in Pakistan, its special envoy for the region will soon visit Islamabad. A meeting with Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins would be the government’s first direct engagement with a senior US official. Nawaz Sharif, named prime minister by PML-N, has met Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and talked to leaders, including US President Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Red Cross office attacked

JALALABAD: Militants attacked a Red Cross office in Jalalabad city in  Afghanistan yesterday, officials said, with gunfire erupting after a loud explosion. “Initial information shows that at least two gunmen have taken position inside the office of the Red Cross and gunfire is continuing. There has also been an explosion,” provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.
