Kabul: A Nato service member was killed following a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in eastern Afghanistan yesterday. Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) following a statement announced, “An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan.” The statement, carried by Afghan newspaper Khama, did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationality of the deceased soldier. Troops, mainly from the US, are based in eastern provinces of Afghanistan.
Two cops hurt by grenades
Karachi: Two policemen were injured when unidentified culprits on a motorbike hurled two hand grenades at KESC police station near Baloch Colony early yesterday. The injured were rushed to hospital where one was said to be in critical condition, police said. Police said the unknown miscreants threw the grenades at the police station and fled, according to Geo News. Security forces cordoned off the area and began investigation.
Drug labs smashed
Moscow: Russian Federal Drug Control Service Director Viktor Ivanov has welcomed cooperation with US special services in combating drug trafficking, including heroin production in Afghanistan. “With the support of Russia and the US, special services of Afghanistan carried out a series of operations to destroy drug laboratories in Afghanistan and dismantle north-bound drug smuggling routes. The latest operation, code name Samshit, was completed a week ago, resulting in the elimination of seven heroin laboratories active in the Russia-bound direction,” Ivanov said at a meeting of the a Russian-US working group.
Air strike kills 17 rebels
Islamabad: At least 17 militants were killed and many injured when Pakistani jets bombed militant hideouts in the Kurram tribal region during a security forces operation yesterday. Sources said that the militants were killed when four insurgent hideouts were destroyed in in central Kurram’s Tabay area. A military operation has been ongoing in the area for three weeks. At least 100 militants have been reportedly killed and several insurgent hideouts destroyed.
