BEIJING: A newborn boy rescued from a toilet pipe in China has been discharged by hospital, its director said yesterday, five days after an ordeal. The baby, from Jinhua in the eastern province of Zhejiang, dubbed “Baby No 59” by nurses after the number of his incubator, become lodged in the pipe after his mother gave birth. He “was picked up yesterday”, Wu Xinhong of Pujiang People’s Hospital, said.
Suicide attempt diverts flight
BEIJING: A flight from Chicago to Beijing made an unscheduled landing in Alaska, United Airlines said yesterday, after reports and passengers said a woman had tried to hang herself in a toilet. The airlines said that the UA851 was diverted and landed in Anchorage “because of a medical emergency” and the passenger involved was taken to hospital. Others were put up in hotels overnight and were due to travel to the Chinese capital.
German fugitive re-arrested
BANGKOK: A German jewel thief who fled his Australian guards while transiting through Bangkok was re-arrested in Bangkok yesterday after two weeks on the run, police said. Carlo Konstantin Kohl, 25, was being extradited to Germany when bad weather forced an extended stopover at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport and the guards took him to a transit lounge. But Kohl, convicted in Australia of stealing opals and drug trafficking and wanted for skipping parole in Germany, escaped. A Thai court handed him a two-year suspended jail term for illegal entry and fined 6,000 baht ($200).
Mayor survives council censure
TOKYO: A Japanese mayor who caused a storm with his comments on wartime “comfort women” survived a censure motion filed by local politicians yesterday. Council members in the western city of Osaka rejected the motion against Toru Hashimoto. He had said that soldiers during the Second World War needed services of about 200,000 sex slaves who were forced into brothels. Agencies
