French household spending rises in May on higher energy consumption

Paris: French household spending rose by 0.5 percent in May from the previous month and 0.3 percent year-on-year, driven by higher energy consumption, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE).

The increase was mainly attributed to stronger gas and electricity consumption following an unusually warm April. Energy spending rose 2.3 percent in May after falling 3.2 percent in April.

Food spending remained unchanged, while spending on manufactured goods slowed to 0.1 percent, despite a 1.8 percent rise in transport equipment purchases, particularly new cars. Textile purchases and household equipment spending declined slightly, and tobacco consumption continued to fall
