Patna: School teachers in Bihar yesterday ended their boycott of the midday meal scheme. They will cooperate with the operation of the scheme from today, Bihar Education Minister P K Shahi said.
The teachers decided to end the boycott following an assurance from the state government that they would be spared work related to the scheme in a phased manner over six months, the education minister said.
About 300,000 teachers began a boycott of the midday meal scheme on July 25, demanding that they be spared non-academic work.
The boycott came in the wake of the death of 23 schoolchildren in Saran district on July 16 after eating food poisoned with a pesticide.
The midday meal scheme is running in 72,000 schools across the state, and 16 million students receive hot, freshly cooked meals under the scheme.
