Two major recycling companies in Qatar have joined hands to share best practices and raise public awareness on the crucial importance of recycling.
Elite Paper Recycling (EPR), a pioneering Qatari SME, and Al Waad Manufacturing Packaging Company (AWMPC), a wood recycling company, yesterday signed an MoU for future partnerships.
“We complement each other in the market because we are both under the same umbrella which is recycling. They recycle wood and we recycle paper which reduce the problems we are facing in the landfills and contribute to making a better environment,” EPR Chairman Abdulla Al Suwaidi said at the signing ceremony held at EPR Head Office yesterday.
On a monthly basis, EPR recycles more than 3,000 tonnes of wastepaper and the company has over 100 trucks which collect wastepaper 24/7, said Al Suwaidi.
EPR has partnered with more than 250 schools, 700 private and public entities in Qatar. It exports 80 percent of its products across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Under the MoU the two companies will be sharing ideas and ways on recycling and collecting waste as well as organize school visits and activities for children to teach them to recycle and take care of the environment, said Al Suwaidi.
AWMPC will act as silver sponsor for EPR’s Eco-Dome project to be launched in October. The project is aimed at teaching children how crucial recycling is in an immersive way using Virtual Reality, he added.
“We will share collection ideas and sponsor the project to be launched in October but this will not stop there; we will have more things to do in the future. We have to train the new generation because they are the ones who are going to drive the world in the future,” said AWMPC CEO Antonio Rostirolla.
“AWMPC is a very young company but we have a very clear vision on the direction our company wants to take which has led AWMPC to venture into wood recycling.
AWMPC joins Qatar’s mission in recycling construction and industrial wood waste to meet the requirement of the fast-rising urban development of the country,” said Rostirolla.
He stressed that recycling is a necessity in today’s society as the amount of waste is constantly growing and resources are becoming depleted. “Wood waste is the second-largest component of construction and demolition debris after concrete. Hence, the concept of recycling wood motivated AWMPC to manufacture wood pallet blocks by recycling waste wooden materials,” he said.
“We recycle 720 cubic meters per month of wood waste, which is equivalent to an average of 240 trees which amounts to 2880 trees saved per year,” he added.
