MANILA: The Philippines economy expanded 7.5 percent in the April-June quarter, the government said Thursday, as higher public and consumer spending helped it defy an Asian slowdown. The data provides a welcome boost to the government at a time when the country’s stock market and currency slump as foreign investors pull out of emerging economies in expectation of an end to the US Federal Reserve’s stimulus.
Storm displaces 7,000 people
MANILA: More than 7,000 persons have been affected by tropical storm “Kong-Rey” disaster management officials said yesterday. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said a total of 7,244 individuals or 1,537 families have been affected by the storm in three regions. Majority of the affected residents, 4,510 of them, were from the Ilocos region while 2,685 were from Eastern Visayas. The remaining 49 affected persons were from Cordillera. As of yesterday, 20 families from Tublay in Benguet and three others from Laoag City have been displaced.
Youth kills dad over attack
ZAMBOANGA CITY: A 68-year-old farmer was killed by his own son for attacking his wife in a remote village in Gutalac town, Zamboanga del Norte on Tuesday. Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 9, identified the slain farmer as Marcos Ignacio Sr, 68 and his son, Ronnie, 22, both residents of Barangay Pitawie. Huesca said the victim died on the spot after being attacked by his son with a scythe.
Councillor hurt, companion dies
ZAMBOANGA CITY: A president of the Association on Barangay Council (ABC) was injured while his companion was killed in an ambush on Wednesday in a village of Pitogo town, Zamboanga del Sur, according to a police official. The police identified the survivor as Noel Laurete Mojillo, ABC president and representative to the municipal council of Pitogo town, while his slain companion was Edgen Aguilar.
