India’s heaviest communication satellite launched

Chennai: India’s heaviest communication satellite GSAT-10 was successfully launched by an Ariane-5 rocket from Kourou launchpad in French Guiana, ISRO said yesterday. It would augment telecommunications, direct-to-home broadcasting and civil aviation needs.

A statement issued by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said the European Ariane-5 rocket injected the 3,400kg GSAT-10 into an elliptical geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) 30 minutes and 45 seconds after the lift off.

Soon after the satellite was put into orbit ISRO’s master control facility at Hassan in Karnataka took over GSAT-10’s command and control functions.

According to ISRO, the preliminary health checks on the various subsystems of the satellite, were performed and all the parameters were found satisfactory.

Justice Altmas Kabir sworn in as Chief Justice

 

New Delhi: Justice Altmas Kabir, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court, was yesterday sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of India.

He was administered the oath of the office by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Justice Kabir has succeeds S H Kapadia, who demitted office yesterday. He will be the Chief Justice of India for nine months, till July 19, 2013.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav were also present at the swearing in, as were scores of cabinet ministers, including Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Farooq Abdullah.
