STRASBOURG: Anar Mammadli, an Azeri activist jailed after highlighting fraud during President Ilham Aliyev’s 2013 re-election, was awarded the Vaclav Havel award yesterday.
The Council of Europe presented the ¤60,000 ($76,000) prize — named after the former Czech president and anti-communist activist — to Mammadli’s father Asaf Mammadov at a ceremony in Strasbourg. The winner himself is behind bars in Azerbaijan.
Mammadli is listed as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. AFP
