New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement aimed at securing a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza and the wider region, praising the role of Arab and Islamic countries in supporting the initiative.
In a statement issued today, Guterres called on all parties to commit to and implement the agreement, stressing that the priority must be alleviating the immense suffering caused by this conflict.
He reiterated his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access across Gaza, and the unconditional release of all hostages. Guterres expressed hope that these steps would pave the way for a two-state solution.
The United Nations remains steadfast in supporting all efforts to promote peace, stability, and a brighter future for both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as the region, he stated.
Meanwhile, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) also stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. The agency warned that this is essential not only to prevent famine but also to provide shelter for children and families as winter approaches.
UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires highlighted the worsening displacement crisis, stating at a press conference that around 400,000 people have fled from northern Gaza to the overcrowded Al Mawasi area, which he said is already facing extremely harsh conditions and is unable to accommodate the massive influx.
