Doha: The Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday sent a cable of congratulations to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his country’s National Day.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani sent a similar cable.
Doha: H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums, yesterday held separate meetings with the ambassadors of Ethiopia, Bangladesh, South Korea, the Philippines, France, Vietnam, Singapore and Sweden. Talks dealt with ways to strengthen cultural relations, especially in the areas of museums and monuments.
DOHA: Hamad International Airport (HIA) yesterday announced an increase in its monthly passenger statistics compared to those at Doha International Airport (DIA). HIA saw a 10 percent passenger increase through its doors in September this year compared to the corresponding month in 2013 at DIA. A total of 2,201,271 travellers departed from, transferred and arrived in Qatar, showcasing the new airport’s global standing as an international transit hub. Cargo, mail and aircraft movements have also increased at HIA with an additional 13.6 percent of cargo traffic, an increase of 4.7 percent of mail and 7.6 percent more aircraft movements in the month.
DOHA: A mock fire drill was held at Ooredoo building in Dafna yesterday under the supervision of the General Directorate of Civil Defence. It started with the emission of smoke and a fire in one of the offices on the 13th floor. The fire alarm went off and employees and customers were notified through loudspeakers to proceed to the emergency exit. Security personnel evacuated the building and guided the people to the safe assembly point. Firefighters and a rescue team from Civil Defence Centre, Wadi Sail, arrived with a fire engine, water tankers and a rapid intervention vehicle. Firefighters doused the blaze and searched for ‘missing’ or ‘injured’ people. Two people were ‘injured’ and taken to ambulance. Al Fazaa also participated in the drill, supervised by Lt. Hamad Eid Al Mohannadi from the centre. Captain Khamees Salem Al Suwaidi, Evacuation Officer at the directorate, said the drill was part of efforts to create awareness about safety measures and train staff of institutions in addressing risks during a fire.
Doha: Forty-four inspectors, including 11 women, yesterday took the oath before the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs
H E Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi, at the ministry headquarters. The ministry said in a statement that the increase in the number of inspectors stems from the ministry’s keenness to promote rights of workers and employers, improve terms and conditions of employment, and fully implement the provisions of the labour law and standards of health and safety.
