DOHA: World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) will open nominations for its annual prize in February.
The nomination period 2014 WISE Prize for Education will remain open until March 31.
The WISE Prize was established in 2011 by H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser in order to enhance the status of education by giving it similar prestige to other areas for which international prizes already exist, such as literature, peace and economics. It is the first distinction of its kind to recognise an individual or a team of up to six people for an outstanding, world-class contribution to education.
The WISE Prize Laureate, whose name is announced at the annual Summit’s Opening Plenary Session, receives a prize of $500,000 and a medal.
Nominations for the WISE Prize for Education are made in the strictest confidence and the nominees are not made aware of their nominations. Self-nominations are not accepted and only the Laureate’s name is made public.
Nominations are invited from individuals and institutions, which have demonstrated commitment to education such as schools, colleges, universities, teachers’ organizations, research facilities, cultural institutions, international organizations and private corporations. Eligible nominees will have demonstrated achievements that have had a lasting impact upon education at any level, through inspiring and visionary approaches.
The WISE Prize for Education Committee screens the nominations following which an international Jury of distinguished individuals makes the final selection. The announcement of the Laureate is one of the highlights of the annual WISE Summit in Doha, Qatar.
In 2013, the WISE Prize was awarded to Vicky Colbert from Colombia, Founder and Director of Fundación Escuela Nueva and co-creator of the Escuela Nueva education model. Prior to this, Dr Madhav Chavan, Co-Founder and CEO of Pratham (India), and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and Chairman of BRAC (Bangladesh), received the WISE Prize in 2012 and 2011 respectively.
