DOHA: Primary healthcare centres are now able to diagnose gestational diabetes in pregnant mothers from the first results of screening.
The new type of screening has a substantial, direct impact on diagnosis. For women, a time may come when challenges of pregnancy and diabetes need to be addressed.
Primary Health Care Corporation has taken the lead in the management of gestational diabetes. This has been achieved through partnership between the Maternal Health section at the Service Development and Health Promotion Directorate and Hamad Medical Corporation, which provided support in the development of guidelines and training. It is recommended that screening for gestational diabetes be conducted between 24 and 28 weeks gestation for women of average risk.
Gestational diabetes is defined as glucose intolerance that is first detected during pregnancy and is associated with a probable resolution after the end of pregnancy.
If good glucose control can be achieved with diet, gestational diabetes has a much lower risk for the mother and the fetus.
Exercise during pregnancy promotes general cardiovascular fitness and increases peripheral insulin sensitivity and hepatic glucose uptake. Many exercise regimens have been designed for pregnant women and are not associated with any risks; however seeking medical advice prior to exercise initiation is essential.
With frequent follow-up, careful patient education, and specialist consultation, physicians and pregnant women with gestational diabetes can expect a healthy pregnancy journey and delivery.
