BEIJING: Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) announced Thursday that foot-and-mouth disease infections have been confirmed in cattle in west China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
The ministry said eight cattle started showing signs of the disease on May 24 in a village near the regional capital of Lhasa, according to Xinhua news agency.
The National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Reference Laboratory on Thursday confirmed the infections as type A foot-and-mouth disease. Local authorities have sealed off and sterilized the infected area, where 70 cattle have been culled and safely disposed of, the ministry said, adding that the disease is currently under control.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a contagious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic and wild species within the family Bovidae. (QNA)
