Oil boom in North Dakota

Published: 31 Jul 2013 - 01:18 am | Last Updated: 31 Jan 2022 - 01:04 pm

A coal-burning energy plant is seen in an aerial view in the early morning hours yesterday near Bismarck, North Dakota. Gas flares are caused when pressure release valves release excess natural gas from an oil pump jack; the gas is then ignited to burn off the fumes. North Dakota has seen a boom in oil production thanks to new drilling techniques including horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
