DOHA: The new National Centre for Diabetes Treatment at the Hamad General Hospital is set to begin a research to collect exact data about the reasons for the high prevalence of diabetes in the country.
Two rooms at the centre has been dedicated for the study, where patients will be interviewed by research coordinators, says Senior Consultant of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Hamad General Hospital, Prof Abdul Badi Abou Samra, who is also Chairman at the Department of Medicine.
“Family history, obesity, and other things that are related to the disease such as insulin resistance are taken into consideration. The patient is subjected to a test to measure exactly how much insulin resistance he has and how much insulin reserve he has,” said Prof Abou Samra.
“We are collecting these data and trying to understand in-depth about this (prevalence of diabetes). Of course, we will be running randomised trials for new diabetes medication, new modality for therapy, study how complications happen, research on eye, foot complications, kidney disease and so on,” he added.
The research will also focus on identifying the nature of diabetes among Qataris and non-Qataris. The Peninsula
