Doha: As the race to provide faster 5G performance among countries intensifies, Qatar has emerged among the top countries in internet speed. Doha has ranked fourth globally in the list of top 15 world capitals with the fastest 5G download speed during the first two quarter of this year, according to Speedtest Intelligence by Ookla.
With a median download speed of 413.40 Mbps, Doha secured fourth position in the ranking.
“Oslo (Norway) was the fastest world capital for 5G during Q1-Q2 2021. Doha had the fourth fastest median download speed over 5G,” said the report by Ookla.
Oslo had the fastest 5G of any world capital, clocking in with a median download speed of 526.74 Mbps while Seoul, South Korea, had the second-fastest median download speed over 5G at 467.84 Mbps
Qatar, which has one of the highest internet penetrations in the world, has always fared better in the field to telecommunications.
The record of Qatar in internet speed has remained impressive throughout the year. The country has been ranked among the top five countries in the global ranking in 2020. Qatar has won several laurels in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in 2020.
One of the highlights was the recognition by the World Economic Forum. In December last year, the country was ranked second in the Arab world and ninth globally in ICT adoption as per the Global Competitiveness Report Special Edition 2020 report by the World Economic Forum.
Qatar has invested substantially in 5G technology which allows peak Internet connection speed to reach 1 Gbps. The roll-out of 5G has also accelerated the development of wider communications infrastructure in Qatar. Adoption of new technology in Qatar is also high as the use of Internet and new devices has increased significantly over the last 10 years.
“Huge investments in 5G are being made to increase performance, especially in major cities. We used Speedtest Intelligence to see which world capitals have the best 5G speeds and availability, based on locations with commercially available 5G during Q1-Q2 2021,” said Ookla.
