Two die as bus falls into ravine

MANILA: Two persons died after a passenger bus fell into a ravine in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija early yesterday.

Police identified the fatalities as Christine Compalas, 37 and Jennifer Payupo, 18.

Investigators said that the driver of the bus fell asleep while driving along a highway in Barangay Capintalan. The bus was bound for Manila from Tuguegarao. The bus driver has been taken into police custody.

Malaysian dead as boat sinks

ZAMBOANGA CITY: A Malaysian national died while 63 passengers and crewmen were rescued when the wooden-hulled motorboat they were on board in sunk when it hit an underwater rock formation off Basilan province, according to an official of the Naval forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) yesterday.

Rear Admiral Isabela Gador, NFWM chief said the ill-fated M/L Muna-Isa 1 was steaming from Mapun Island off Tawi-Tawi last Saturday bound for Basilan when it sunk near the vicinity of Pilas island Hadji Muhtamad town.

Military kills rebel leader

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Troops killed a commander of the New People’s Army (NPA) during an encounter in Misamis Occidental, a military official said yesterday.

Lt Col Rommel Almaria of the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion, identified the slain NPA commander as Henry Celajes alias Jongjong, a native of Davao.       Agencies
