DOHA: Katara opens the New Year with Arabic musical Shams Qamar (Sun and Moon) to be staged at Katara Opera House from January 3 to 5.
Made by renowned composer Wajdi Shaya and edited by Jihad Al Andari, the play features famous artistes, including Assi El Hallani who will play the role Qamar and Nadine Al Rassi as Shams. The cast also include Faek Houmaissi, Jelibar Jalakh, Tony Aad and Ali El Zein, among others.
The musical play, which runs for 90 minutes, tells the love story of Shams and Qamar and reflects the concept of love and devotion.
It illustrates human struggles afflicted by politics, where the segregation of the oppressed and the free, terror and courage, pride and dignity are enhanced. Amid all the chaos stems a love story between the two main characters.
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara, said it is the aim of Katara to propagate the culture of theatre and belief in intellectual and cultural interaction which cannot be realised without theatre, and showcase Arab theatre and achievements in this field.
Katara’s aim is to provide people with high-level experience in theatre arts, show how Arab theatre has evolved and its role reflecting the noble life of society, and contribute to the development of Arab civilisation, Dr Al Sulaiti said.
The title of the play portrays differences of human traits through the Sun and Moon, which can never unite.
“The content has been modified because scientifically, the sun and the moon cannot meet, therefore in the past performances of the play they didn’t meet but I will be happy for them to meet in Qatar for the first time.
“And I hope the audience will enjoy the musical,” said Shaya, adding he was happy that his latest work would be performed in Katara.
