MANILA: The authorities rescued 52 passengers who were on board a vessel that was about to sink yesterday.
The ship partially submerged after it lost its propeller in Oriental Mindoro. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Action Center in Manila revealed that around 6,30am local time the M/V Baleno 168’s propeller was detached while about to dock at Calapan Port Terminal.
“Personnel from Coast Guard Station Batangas together with other rescue units conducted a rescue and evacuation operation and successfully placed all 52 passengers to safety few hours later,” the PCG said.
After safely evacuating all the passengers, the agency said attempts to place the vessel on a stable position failed. As of press time, the ship was still half submerged on its right side.
The PCG advised the Besta Shipping Lines, the owner of the vessel, to immediately submit a plan on how to bring back the ship to a stable condition.
Woman hits infant daughter to death
COTABATO CITY: A 21-year-old mother who accidentally killed her one-year-old daughter and buried her at their backyard is in police custody.
Senior Inspector Elias Dandan, municipal police chief of Matalam town in North Cotabato, said they will file criminal charges against Jocelyn Lavandero, who had confessed to having hit her daughter repeatedly with both hands, which caused the child’s death.
Dandan said they learned of the incident from a neighbour of the Lavandero family in Barangay Bangbang, a remote district in Matalam. Dandan said the mother tried to cover up the accident by burying her child’s cadaver in a shallow grave at their backyard.
Wilma Ma-aya, Social Welfare Officer of the Matalam local government unit, said Lavandero confessed to having killed her child in the presence of Barangay officials that accompanied Dandan and his men to Barangay Banbang to investigate on the incident.
“She got furious with her continuous, loud cry for a long time which caused her to lose control and hit the infant repeatedly with her bare hands,” she said.
