ISLAMABAD: Out of nearly 75,000 prisoners in Pakistan, around 1,100 are women, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says. “The misery of women prisoners is that their families no longer care for them or stay in contact with them or pursue their cases due to social stigma,” said a commission official yesterday. Quoting the latest report ‘State of Human Rights in 2012’, he said the situation is worse for nearly three dozen women on the death row. The women prisoners, he said, were not provided with adequate medical assistance as many prisons did not have full-time female doctors or any doctors. “Women are the most vulnerable detainees,” he said.
30 rebels killed in Afghanistan
Kabul: At least 30 Taliban militants were killed and 12 injured in joint operations by Afghan forces and the International Security Assistance Force across the country in the past 24 hours. The Interior Ministry said forces also arrested eight rebels in several provinces and seized large quantities of heavy and light weapons.
Rs14.5trn debt on Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s external debt stands at Rs14.5trn, including $66bn loans and sovereign guarantees. The country also needs to pay back $3bn loan to the IMF this year. The previous government took from IMF $11.50bn but failed to meet its conditions. As a result the IMF refused to release more loans. However, incumbent Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has succeeded in getting IMF consent for a $5.3bn loan, assuring it that its conditions would be met. The IMF agreed to release $6.64bn, and its first installment worth $540m was released on September 6.
3 die as school bus overturns
