Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq (L) in action as England's Jonny Bairstow (R) looks on.

James Anderson spoiled Azhar Ali's comeback as Pakistan lost both their openers to reach 87 for two wickets at lunch on the opening day of the third and final test against England on Sunday.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq won his sixth successive toss in tests and, like in the previous two matches against England, opted to bat on a flat track that seemed to offer little for the pacemen.

Anderson still managed to induce an edge from Azhar, and Mohammad Hafeez (27) paid the price for his aggression and failed to convert the start.

Shoaib Malik (37) and Younus Khan (21) were unbeaten at the break, using their feet and looking comfortable against England's three-pronged spin attack.

Anderson was rewarded for his immaculate line when the scoreless Azhar, one of the two changes in the Pakistan squad who lead the series 1-0 on their adopted home, edged to perish caught behind.

It was a slow start for Pakistan but Hafeez looked confident before succumbing to a soft dismissal, top edging Moeen to midwicket.

The bearded spinner also had Malik, then on 22, trapped leg before but the Pakistani batsman reviewed the decision and got it overturned after replays confirmed the ball was missing the stump by a long way.

Along with Azhar, Pakistan also brought in Rahat Ali for injured paceman Imran Khan, while England bolstered their spin department by including Samit Patel to the playing XI in which James Taylor was also drafted in.

Among the three England spinners, only Moeen got a wicket but Adil Rashid and Patel generated significant turn from an opening day wicket.
