FIFTY/FIFTY Concert on April 8, 2017 at 19.30pm at the German International School Doha.
Doha Youth Choir in its fourth year since inception brings to the community a new sound in choral singing all the way from Germany.
Announcing the choir group’s latest concert in April with the visiting all male choir from Magdeburg in Germany, DYC’s founder director, Alena Pyne, takes the choir a step ahead in community engagement and cultural exchange as part of its participation in the Qatar-German 2017 Year of Culture in collaboration with the Doha German Embassy.
“Germany is renowned for the significant contribution by composers to world music since the early days of music’s development. So many composers of standard classical repertoire hail from this great land, such as JS Bach, Schutz, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Wagner. The art of choral singing is also greatly valued in Germany and Germans are especially proud of their heritage of All-Male choirs. For the first time in Qatar, one of Germany’s best known all-male choirs, the Magdeburg Knabenchor including boy sopranos, will perform one public concert together with their hosts the Doha Youth and Junior Choirs,” says Alena Pyne
In their journey of music, DYC not only travels to other countries with its music, but brings to the country choirs of standing and influence from around the world. This year the Magdeburger Knabenchor, founded in 1985 under the continued artistic direction of Frank Satzky will travel to Doha for this cultural exchange of music. The varied programme for the concert includes choral literature from past centuries to the present, predominantly four-voice compositions, a cappella as well as accompanied, from classical to folk through to pop songs.
This concert is a result of great community collaboration between many different partners, according to Pyne. The host venue and long-time supporter of the choir - the German International School of Doha, the Millennium Hotel Doha, Yamaha Fifty One East, Saracen Community Initiative, and the Goethe Institut, are the main partners in this choral presentation.
“Doha Youth and Junior Choir also remains indebted to Doha College for providing us with a great rehearsal space every week. Finally, we are very grateful to the Qatar German Year of Culture Committee for approving this concert as one of the events in the 2017 year of culture calendar,” says Pyne.
