Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality has issued a set of environmental guidelines for schools as part of preparations for the new 2026–2027 academic year, encouraging students and school communities to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to creating greener and cleaner learning environments.
Under the theme “How Can We Create a Green and Sustainable School Environment?”, the ministry urged students to take an active role in protecting greenery and promoting responsible use of natural resources within schools and their surrounding areas.
The guidelines encourage students to participate in planting trees and seedlings on school premises and in nearby areas, while taking proper care of plants by watering them with appropriate amounts of water and avoiding unnecessary consumption.
The ministry also called on students to protect green spaces and agricultural beds, avoid damaging plants, and help keep soil and areas surrounding vegetation clean and free of waste.
As part of its waste-management guidance, the Ministry of Municipality highlighted the importance of waste segregation at source and reminded students that different types of waste should be placed in designated containers.
Recyclable materials, including paper, plastic, glass and metal cans, should be placed in the blue recycling containers, while food waste should not be mixed with recyclable materials. General waste should instead be placed in the grey containers.
The ministry stressed that proper waste sorting at the source can play an important role in keeping schools clean, reducing waste and supporting sustainable environmental practices.
The guidelines form part of broader efforts to promote environmental awareness among students and encourage sustainable behaviour from an early age, helping make schools healthier, cleaner and more environmentally responsible places for learning.
By combining tree planting, responsible water use, protection of green spaces and proper waste segregation, students can contribute directly to building a more sustainable school environment throughout the 2026–2027 academic year.
