HANOI: Typhoon Wutip left a trail of destruction with at least five people dead, dozens of fishermen missing in the South China Sea and thousands of homes damaged in Vietnam, authorities said yesterday. Roads were flooded, sea dykes damaged and power lines torn up along Vietnam’s central coast, including in top tourist attractions such as the World Heritage Site of Hoi An and the ancient capital of Hue.
Modernisation of army delayed
MANILA: The Department of National Defence yesterday admitted that the Supreme Court’s decision to stop Malampaya funds would affect the modernisation of the military. Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said proceeds from the Malampaya natural gas project is one of the sources of the Armed Forces’ upgrade programme and are being used to refurbish two ships acquired from the US.
Rebel killed in Davao clash
DAVAO CITY: Government troops clashed with communist rebels yesterday in Aliwagwag village in Cateel, Davao Oriental in the southern Philippines, leaving one rebel dead and five soldiers wounded, the military said.
