SEOUL: State prosecutors yesterday raided the offices of South Korea’s top fixed-line operator and number two mobile carrier, KT Corp, as part of an ongoing corruption probe, a company spokesman said. Investigators collected computer hard drives and documents from the company’s three major offices in Seoul and elsewhere, in the second such raid in 10 days. KT said in a regulatory filing yesterday that its third-quarter net profit plunged 63 percent from a year earlier to 136bn won ($128m).
Foreigners held for laundering
JAKARTA: Indonesia’s National Police Criminal Investigation Directorate has arrested 25 Nigerians in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, for alleged involvements in money laundering via email account hijacking, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported. Indonesian Police Commissioner General Sutarman said during the raid, the police also took three Indonesian women into custody. All of the suspects were alleged to be involved in online frauds with potential losses of around US$2.719m, he added.
Bribery lands ex-official in jail
BEIJING: China yesterday jailed for life a former vice governor of the northeastern province of Jilin and former banker for taking more than $3m in bribes, in the government’s latest move to crack down on deep-rooted corruption. Tian Xueren was expelled from the ruling Communist Party in July of last year and went on trial last month in Beijing, accused of receiving more than 19m yuan ($3.12m) in bribes, state media have said.
Case against top prosecutor
TAIPEI: Taiwan’s chief prosecutor was indicted yesterday for leaking confidential information to President Ma Ying-jeou about a controversial probe into influence peddling claims, officials said. Prosecutor-General Huang Shyh-ming was charged with leaking secrets relating to the probe, which is examining allegations that parliamentary speaker Wang Jin-pyng meddled in a case implicating an opposition MP. “Prosecutors should remain neutral and independent... but the accused rushed to brief the president who was not involved in the case to provide information of a probe in violation of the laws,” the Taipei district prosecutor’s office said.
