DOHA: According to its Sustainable Development policy and in the framework of COP18, QDVC is working closely with different schools of Qatar to raise awareness of the children on environmental protection approach.
Since the beginning of November, more than 500 pupils, from 7 to 15 years old, had attended QDVC workshops on sustainable development and climate change at Ibn Khaldoum Prep Independent School for Boys, French Lycee Bonaparte, Abu Obaida Independent Preparatory School and Arifaa Primary Independent School for Girls.
The goal of the workshop is to explain greenhouse effects, causes of climate change and the solution to reducing it. The way the schools and all the students welcomed QDVC sustainable development team and the number of questions they asked show how much the next generation is concerned by these eco-friendly topics.
The children will go on working on sustainable development topics with their teachers. French Bonaparte School pupils will for instance make “art out of waste” with their art teacher.
QDVC’s Sustainable Development team received certificates of appreciation from the schools, which show that they are ready to receive more workshops about Sustainable Development in future.
A survey made at the end of the workshops showed that the pupils were personally ready to take preventive action to cut climate change and preserve the environment, such as turning off the lights when leaving a room.
“Education for Sustainable Development is essential. It helps children understand and mitigate the impact of global warming and encourages changes in their attitude, that’s why I’m really happy to be able to collaborate with schools. Interaction between them and companies such as QDVC also allow us to share academic information with our day-to-day experience. I hope that such workshops can be part of the global response to climate change,” said Sheikha Athba bint Thamer Al Thani, Chief Support Services Officer and Sustainable Development Manager of QDVC.
