Commuters at the terminus.
DOHA: Concrete safety barriers have been installed at Al Ghanim bus terminus, three months after the freak bus mishap which injured 13 expatriates of various nationalities.
The barriers have been set up to protect commuters in the waiting area in case a similar accident happens, said a bus driver who was at the terminus when the incident occurred last August.
“It was such an unfortunate incident which came as a shock to all of us. We never imagined that it would happen,” he recalled.
It was the first such accident at the terminus since Mowasalat started operating public buses eight years ago.
Mowasalat figures revealed the terminus receives from 80,000 to 100,000 commuters on a daily basis and the number increases during weekends and national holidays. Passengers hailed the move of Mowasalat to set up barriers as they believe it is very important to ensure commuters’ safety at all times.
“We don’t know when or where accidents would happen so it is very important passengers are safe whether travelling in a bus or waiting at the bus station,” said a Filipino who regularly rides the bus to his work.
“That incident should never happen again. Many of us who avail bus service are low-income workers and I can’t imagine myself being hospitalised, unable to work and support my family back home,” said Shamim, a Bangladeshi worker. The barriers have been painted in yellow, white and green, making them noticeable to drivers as their buses approach the boarding stand. The Peninsula
