NEW YORK--The April 15, 2013 Boston bombings killed three, wounded hundreds and transformed the northeastern US city's celebrated marathon into a scene of carnage.

One hundred and two hours after the attack, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested -- severely wounded and hidden in a boat -- around six miles (10 kilometers) from the finish line where the bombs detonated.

A timeline:

Monday, April 15
Tens of thousands of people assemble for the Boston Marathon, run each year on the city's "Patriot's Day."

At 2:49 pm, two bombs explode about 640 feet (195 meters) from each other and 12 seconds apart. Investigators say the bombs were detonated by Dzhokhar and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, two Muslim Chechens whose family had lived in the United States for 10 years.

The downtown blast kills three and wounds 264, 15 of whom lost limbs. Some 5,700 runners are unable to finish the race, and an investigation involving more than 20 federal agencies is launched.

Tamerlan returns to his apartment. Dzhokar tweets: "Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people."

Tuesday, April 16
On edge over the bombing, rumors in the city multiply. A Saudi student is falsely accused of the crime. Investigators comb through hours of surveillance tape before locating the Tsarnaev brothers, yet to be identified.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev returns to the campus of the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, south of Boston.

Wednesday, April 17
Investigators speak publicly about a suspect, but they do not give details. False information is reported about an arrest. Dzhokhar continues to post on Twitter.

Thursday, April 18
Morning: President Barack Obama travels to Boston to attend a memorial ceremony.

5:20 pm: The FBI release surveillance photos of the two suspects, one in a white hat and one in a black hat, asking the public for help in finding them.

10:20 pm: The two brothers allegedly kill a police officer on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

11:00 pm: The brothers hijack a Mercedes SUV, force its owner to withdraw $800 from a bank machine and speak of traveling to New York to carry out another attack.

Friday, April 19
12:15 am: The owner of the Mercedes escapes from the car at a gas station and alerts authorities.

12:45 am: The car is seen in Watertown, a western suburb of Boston. Police confront the pair and a shootout ensues. Tamerlan is killed and several police are injured. Dzhokhar flees on foot.

Boston residents are advised to stay home. Some 9,000 police officers, as well as helicopters and armored vehicles, are involved in the search. Public transport is suspended, schools and universities are closed.

6:30 pm: Dzhokhar is located by a resident who notices the cover of his boat in his yard has been moved. He sees a body covered in blood in the boat and calls police.

8:45 pm: Police announce the arrest of Dzhokhar, video of which is broadcast live on television. He is seriously wounded.
