PESHAWAR: The government of Pakistan’s north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reinstated more than 4,000 civil servants, who were sacked by the second Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government in the province after being declared redundant, officials said.

Their reinstatement comes after the Election Commission of Pakistan banned recruitment in the public sector, according to official documents.

“The provincial authorities are of the view that the decision to restore their services had been taken much before the Election Commission’s decision banning new recruitments,” said an official.

However, according to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Establishment Department’s appointment letter, in one particular case, the restored employee, who was appointed to a BPS-07 post, was informed that his appointment would be considered a fresh appointment.

There is difference of opinion in official circles about the fresh appointments following the Election Commission’s recently imposed restriction on recruitment in public sector entities.

Defending the provincial government’s move to issue appointment letters to the reinstated employees, a well-placed official said the election commission’s instructions did not stand violated because the decision to restore the employees had been taken by the provincial government in November 2011.

As per the government’s decision, the sacked employees have been re-employed on a temporary basis.

According to an appointment letter, the reappointed employee concerned has been informed that the appointment was temporary and liable to be terminated at any time without assigning any reason.
