New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday met the UN’s High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Nasser bin Abdul Aziz Al Nasr. They discussed the role of the alliance in achieving sustainable development.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
Addressing the summit Al Nasr said that the UNAOC Fourth Forum, which took place in Doha in December 2011, highlighted the close relationship between dialogue among different cultures and civilizations on the one hand, and sustainable development on the other.
He added that he will adopt this approach while leading UNAOC after the fifth forum in March, noting that he will work on activating its role in development and providing equal opportunities and peace.
He also reviewed the alliance’s role in supporting sustainable development during his term as the president of the 66th UN General Assembly in 2011-2012.
Also on the sidelines of the summit, the TERI yesterday awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy to Al Nasr in recognition of his role in supporting international efforts to achieve sustainable development.
Qatar’s Ambassador to India Hassan Mohammed Rafeh Al Emadi held a banquet dinner in honour of Al Nasr. Several Arab ambassadors, a number of other diplomats and senior Indian officials participate in the dinner.
