RAWALPINDI: With elections just a few months away, the Punjab government is offering laptops to brilliant students of federal government educational institutions, provincial colleges and universities located in Rawalpindi.
In this regard, the provincial government has finalised a list of 8,500 students of provincial and federal institutions.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will distribute the laptops among the students at ceremonies to be held at Fatima Jinnah Women University and Jinnah Convention Centre on February 4.
A total 4,100 laptops will be given to students of educational institutions in Islamabad, including Comsats, National University of Modern Languages, National University of Science and Technology, National College of Arts, Federal Urdu University, and Quaid-i-Azam University.
In Punjab government schools, colleges and universities located in Rawalpindi, a total 4,400 students will get the laptops.
Students of Fatima Jinnah Women University will get 1,041 laptops, those at University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, will get 1,110 laptops, Pir Mehar Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University students will get 1,500 laptops, Rawalpindi Medical College students 94, and the rest will be given to students of government colleges.
A senior official in Punjab said the chief minister’s secretariat had prepared the final lists and given them to the City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) for the distribution.
When approached for his comments, District Coordination Officer Saqib Zafar said the laptop scheme was part of a previous scheme and the provincial government had not launched any new scheme.
However, political parties have termed the distribution of laptops a violation of the election commission’s directives.
