DOHA: As part of the Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) commitment to promoting health prevention among groups most vulnerable to complications, the Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department participated in the ‘Safe Hajj for Diabetic Pilgrims’ event. The event was organised in collaboration with the Qatar Diabetes Association recently, with the aim of supporting diabetic pilgrims through essential health guidance before performing the Hajj rituals.
The team made sure to offer a comprehensive awareness booth that featured educational materials and interactive displays focused on oral and dental care during the Hajj season—especially for diabetic patients, who often experience changes in saliva production and slower wound healing, increasing their risk of gum infections and mouth ulcers. The participating team also conducted oral and dental check-ups for pilgrims who wished to ensure their oral health was in good condition.
The awareness booth covered several key topics, including oral first aid, preparing an oral care kit, healthy nutrition rich in vitamin C, calcium, and proteins, harmful habits to avoid, the importance of keeping the mouth hydrated with water to reduce dryness, and the role of early dental check-ups before travel in preventing issues that could hinder the performance of Hajj.
The booth also highlighted the strong link between oral health and blood sugar levels, stressing the importance of incorporating daily gum and dental care into a diabetic patient’s health routine—particularly under the physical and emotional stresses associated with Hajj.
