DOHA: The meeting of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) after the long summer break that was slated to be held on September 10, has been put off as not many public representatives have returned yet from their overseas sojourns.

Many CMC members are still enjoying their holidays abroad despite having been notified that the House would convene on September 10 after the long summer break to discuss important business, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

The absence of several members has prompted the secretariat-general of the public representative body to send SMSs to all the members informing them that the September 10 fixture had been rescheduled on September 17.

According to the daily, the law regulating the CMC stipulates that it must convene in the first week of September after the summer break each year.

The September 10 meet of the CMC was scheduled to discuss the response of the Minister of Municipality and Urban Planning to the various recommendations that the House forwarded to him on various issues of public importance in the recent past.

The first municipal council in Qatar was formed in the early 1950s and it was reorganised in 1956. Doha municipality came into being in May 1963, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs was established in 1972 as a government body responsible for supervising the functions of municipalities.

Decree No 4 for 1963 organised, for the first time, the election and appointment of the members of the municipal council.
