ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government plans to recruit 500 Sub Inspectors (SIs) through the provincial Public Service Commission (PPSC) to be appointed as Additional Station House Officers.
“The infusion of fresh blood will help change the police culture, which is a huge bane for the people, who are condemned to visit police stations in connection with different cases,” a senior official said.
Certainly, he said, these SIs will be young men who will bring about a change in the police force, which is notorious for being dominated by the tough old guard.
The official said the influence of political figures and lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz or any of its allied parties in the recruitment process is ruled out because the SIs will be selected by the PPSC through a written examination, interview and fitness test.
It is generally accepted that inductions through the federal and provincial public service commissions are transparent and above board, and merit is strictly observed.
At present, only three cadres — Assistant Superintendents of Police, Assistant SIs and constables are employed in the police force.
Not only Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif but every successive administration has talked about changing the police culture, but nobody has done much in this connection.
