Doha, Qatar: The UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and the Embassy of Mexico in Qatar inaugurated a photographic exhibition and a cultural memorial display to commemorate the traditional indigenous festivity of the ‘Day of the Dead’ at United Nations House in Lusail. Organized in collaboration with UNESCO, this year’s celebration expands Mexico’s cultural outreach in Qatar and brings the festivity to a broader institutional and community audience for the first time.

The ceremony brought together representatives from United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, Qatari authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, and the local community. In the festive spirit of the occasion, attendees learned about the history and symbolism of the Altarde Muertos, a cultural memorial display that represents the unique blend of traditions that shape modern Mexico’s identity. The event also featured a performance by the Latin American Folkloric Ballet of Qatar, showcasing traditional songs and dances associated with the celebration.

In his opening remarks, HE Dr. Guillermo Ordorica Robles, Ambassador of Mexico to the State of Qatar, highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy as a bridge between nations and expressed gratitude to UNESCO for supporting the preservation of Mexico’s living traditions in Qatar. He noted, “Through this celebration, we share with the world a message of remembrance, unity, and respect for life.”
Salah Khaled, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, added, “We gather to honor Mexico’s Day of the Dead, a UNESCO masterpiece of intangible heritage. This vibrant tradition beautifully merges indigenous beliefs and Catholicism, creating a unique celebration where life lovingly remembers its ancestors. It strengthens community bonds and links cultural identity to the maize harvest cycles. This living heritage exemplifies why culture must be central to global policy, a vision Mexico powerfully champions through its support of MONDIACULT cultural policy, affirming culture as a global public good for a sustainable future.”
