Doha, Qatar: Nadhira Al Harthy, the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest in 2019, was among two climbers who have been confirmed dead following an avalanche on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan on July 30, according to an Instagram post by the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Al Harthy's death was confirmed along with Nepali climber Pur Bahadur Gurung, also known as "Yukta".
The Alpine Club of Pakistan said Al Harthy's body was recovered from the site and transported by helicopter to Skardu. The Oman News Agency also officially confirmed her death, as tributes and condolence messages poured in on Instagram for the Omani mountaineer.
Gurung's body was also recovered from the site and transported to Skardu.
"The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirms, with profound sorrow, the loss of two climbers from the July 30 avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047m)," the club said in its Instagram post.
In an earlier update, the club said the expedition comprised 10 climbers, including six Nepalese, one Pakistani, one Omani, one American and one Chinese climber.
Among those still missing is renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, widely known as "Nims Dai," who gained international recognition for climbing all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks in just over six months in 2019.
According to the latest update, four bodies have been located at the site, while six climbers remain missing.
Rescue operations remain underway as search teams continue efforts to locate the remaining missing climbers.
