Qatar Foundation Stadium & Health and Wellness Precinct Frequently Asked Questions
q What is the stadium’s full name and title?
The Stadium and surrounding precinct’s full name is Qatar Foundation Stadium & Health and Wellness Precinct.
q Where will the stadium be located?
The Qatar Foundation Stadium & Health and Wellness Precinct will be located at Education City, Qatar Foundation’s flagship project, a 1,000-hectare campus with a number of leading educational institutions. Education City is located 7km west of Doha.
q What is the stadium capacity?
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ the stadium capacity will be 40,000. In legacy mode, the top tier of seats will be removed and the capacity reduced to 25,000 to ensure efficient use of the stadium.
q What other facilities will be part of the precinct?
The surrounding precinct will contain a number of facilities available to the entire QF family and members of the local community including Health and medical clinics for adults and children, male and female gymnasiums, swimming pool, tennis courts and football pitches. Non-traditional sports will also be catered for, including cycling and climbing. A range of restaurants and cafes which offer healthy options will also be developed as part of the proposals.
The entire precinct will have a sustainable business model and will encourage healthy lifestyles, unlock human potential and demonstrate QF’s commitment to fitness and well-being.
q When will the stadium be completed?
The projected completion date for the Qatar Foundation Stadium & Health and Wellness Precinct is the fourth quarter of 2018.
q During construction, how do you plan to ensure a minimal level of disruption?
Both the Qatar Foundation and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy will be in constant contact with the QF community in order to keep them informed about the progress of construction work. The Supreme Committee will engage the community with several activities as part of our local engagement program, such as Majlis discussions and town hall events, among others. Our goal is for the residents of precinct areas to be informed and prepared for potential disruption, while also gaining their support for the tournament.
q Who are the contractors appointed on the stadium?
The overall project responsibility lies with Qatar Foundation Capital Projects Directorate. The Project manager is Astad Project Management and the design consultant is RFA Fenwick Iribarren Architects.
q What measures are being implemented to ensure the stadium is sustainable?
There are a number of measures being put in place to ensure that the stadium is sustainable and contributes towards an environmentally friendly 2022 FIFA World Cup™ with developers targeting a Gold Sustainability Building Certification in the US Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings system.
Measures taken to ensure this is achieved include:
•    At least 20 percent of the total materials used for the project will come from sustainable sources.
•    Fifty percent of all wood-based materials will be procured from sources with sustainable forest management practices.
•    Twenty percent of materials will be sourced regionally reducing the carbon footprint of importing materials.
•    Photovoltaic and reflective technologies will be used to produce energy for electricity and hot water. Photovoltaic and solar thermal panels will help power the stadium, swimming pool and indoor pavilion.
q Who will be able to use the stadium and precinct in legacy mode?
The Stadium and Precinct will be open to the entire QF community. In line with a sustainable business model for the precinct members of the public who sign up to membership schemes will also have access to the facilities.
q What progress is being made by the SC regarding other stadium developments?
By the end of 2014, the SC and its delivery partners (Aspire Zone and Qatar Foundation) will have begun work on five stadiums across Qatar. The stadiums under construction are: Al Wakrah, Al Bayt – Al Khor, Khalifa International Stadium, Qatar Foundation Stadium & Health and Wellness Precinct and Al Rayyan Stadium.
q Do the SC Workers’ Welfare Standards (SC Standards) apply to Qatar Foundation Stadium and the Health and Wellness Precinct (QF Stadium)?
Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Capital Projects Directorate is managing the construction of QF Stadium. With the exception of the early works contractor, who was awarded prior to the release of the QF Mandatory Standards of Migrant Workers’ Welfare (QF Standards), all contractors and sub-contractors working on this project will be contractually required to comply with the QF Standards.
q Why do QF and the SC have different standards?
The SC and QF each developed workers’ welfare standards to allow for private regulation of working conditions on their respective projects. Both sets of standards — which are based on Qatari labour law and international best practices — establish minimum requirements that protect the rights of workers from recruitment to repatriation.
The SC and QF Standards are very similar and only differ in terms of the accommodation specifications.
q How does the SC monitor compliance on sites that are under QF oversight?
QF’s HSSE Directorate works closely with the SC Workers’ Welfare Committee to ensure the health, safety and dignity of all workers on the QF Stadium project.
QF Stadium contractors are first audited by QF’s HSSE Directorate based on the QF Standards, and feedback reports are submitted to the SC for verification. This verification process also includes SC audits on these contractors.
