London: The first airstrikes by British jets against Islamic State targets in Syria were "successful" and mark the start of a "long campaign" targeting the extremist group, Defence Minister Michael Fallon said on Thursday.
Four Royal Air Force Tornado jets bombed six targets in the Islamic State-controlled Omar oilfield close to Syria's border with Iraq, the ministry said, following parliamentary approval of the airstrikes late Wednesday.
"The Tornados were successful in striking these targets... and all four Tornados have now successfully returned," Fallon told the BBC.
Wednesday's decisive parliamentary vote, by a majority of 397 to 223, followed an intense debate lasting 10 hours.
