DOHA: Abstract works by Qatari artist Ameera Al Aji are featured in a solo exhibition ‘Different’ at Katara Building 18.
The exhibition, which runs until March 20, features white-and-blue installations in triangular shape in various sizes through which Al Aji attempts to address the concept of difference and challenges of being different.
It features 145 ‘pyramids’ and six large-scale rectangular panels with the title ‘Celebration of differences’.
The concept of triangles, she says, has been drawn from her recollections from her interaction with her environment and inspired by traditional designs predominantly used in sadu weaving heritage of the region.
Each triangle has a distinct pattern. While some are equilateral with similar height and size, others are varied in terms of angle, orientation and presentation in space.
The repetitiveness of triangles suggests challenges one faces every day, the variation in sizes highlights the varied intensity of challenges, while the differences in angles and positioning depict transitions one experiences in various stages in life, she explains.
Ahmed Al Sayed, Deputy Director General, Operations, Katara opened the exhibition and praised Al Aji for the artistic maturity shown by the works which embody universal human experience through the artist’s expression of her thoughts and feelings.
He said Katara has always been keen to encourage Qatari artists by providing them with a platform to display their expertise through their works which create a mark in the local and global art scene.
Al Aji has participated in exhibitions in Qatar and overseas, including Oman and Abu Dhabi.
She has been recognised for her works, some of which have been acquired by individuals and institutions here and abroad.
