Qatar to take part in 'Baku 2017' Islamic Solidarity Games

Doha: Qatar will participate in the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games (Baku 2017), which will be held in Azerbaijan from May 12 to 22. Qatar will take part in 15 group and individual games and will be represented by 75 athletes.
 Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari will head the Qatar mission.
Director of the administrative delegation Mohammed Saeed Al Masnad said in a press conference yesterday that Qatari Athletes will participate in volleyball, basketball (3x3), athletics, swimming, archery, tennis, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo, judo, karate, athletics 'for persons with special needs', wrestling, boxing and gymnastics.
He stressed that the participating Qatari teams are ready to compete in the fourth round of Islamic Solidarity Games, which will be attended by more than 5000 athletes representing 57 countries from 4 continents who will compete in 23 games over 10 days.
He added that there is a great hope for many medals, especially in athletics, archery, weightlifting, basketball (3x3), table tennis, boxing, taekwondo and karate, as well as volleyball and swimming.
"The participation in (Baku 2017) is of great importance to our teams, especially as it is a great opportunity for the federations to prepare players for the upcoming tournaments", Al Masnad.
He went on saying that the selection of players and unions participating in the tournament was according to the criteria and the possibility of winning medals.
He also pointed out that in the last edition of the tournament held in Indonesia in 2013 Qatari athletes won 5 medals, one gold, two silver and two bronze, expressing hope for a better achievement and a bigger number of medals in Baku (2017).
