ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan Syed Khursheed Shah is consulting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on urgent basis for finding a consensus nominee on behalf of the opposition for the slot of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
It is yet to be ascertained that whether Imran Khan will be prepared to enter into consultations phase with the opposition leader.
It is likely that the two parties will have informal consultations pertaining to the subject. With the appointment of Justice Nasirul Mulk as new Chief Justice of Pakistan, the office of the acting CEC will be rendered vacant as soon he takes oath for the office this week.
Keeping in view the development, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Khursheed Shah have agreed to step up their efforts for reaching consensus to pick a suitable person for the office.
The opposition leader who met Nawaz Sharif on Monday assured him that he would submit his proposals within this week in this regard.
He had already written a letter to the prime minister.
He will have consultations with his own Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadership and also with Imran Khan and Shaikh Rashid Ahmad of the Awami Muslim league (AML) besides the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Awami National Party (ANP) for the purpose since they are part of the opposition in the Lower House of the Parliament.
Highly placed sources said that the prime minister, who is also leader of the house in the National Assembly, will take his allies into confidence about the final decision regarding the nomination of the CEC.
