Doha, Qatar: As the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) continues to combat the invasive myna bird population in the country, it has outlined simple steps on how the public can help assist and support in this bird control campaign.

The Ministry encourages the public to report sightings of myna bird gatherings or nesting sites. These reports help specialized teams manage and contain the spread of this invasive species more effectively.

Residents are also advised not to provide food sources for myna birds. This includes avoiding the disposal of leftover food in open areas, especially after feeding domestic animals. Keeping garbage bins covered to prevent access to food waste is another important step.

The Ministry also recommends reducing potential nesting sites by sealing holes in walls and roofs. Additionally, removing dry branches from trees that may offer suitable shelter for nesting is advised.

The Ministry also urges the public not to tamper with or destroy cages and traps placed in public areas to capture myna birds. Instead, allow trained teams to handle the captured birds appropriately.

Raising awareness about the dangers of the myna bird is another key part of the campaign. The Ministry encourages individuals to share information with family and friends to help curb the spread of this invasive species.

The Myna bird is classified as one of the world's most aggressively invasive avian species, according to a list by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In addition to exhibiting aggressive behavior toward other bird species, it also threatens crops and may carry diseases such as avian influenza and malaria, according to a 2009 study by Marcula.
